Advanced Serious Incident Reporting: getting back on track
The everyday challenges of reporting pastoral incidents are many and varied – and getting things back on track after the incident often requires a coordinated response to ensure the wellbeing of the learner and the success of their next class. So how do outstanding specialist colleges manage this process?
A review of recent inspection data for specialist colleges highlighted that, amongst other data management best practices, outstanding providers have robust processes in place for managing each learner’s ability to stay safe - including online. Whilst general health and safety practices are good in most colleges, outstanding colleges also focus on the psychological safety of each learner, enabling them to report and get support if they feel unsafe, bullied, harassed – or at risk of radicalisation or extremism.
Outstanding providers have thorough and traceable safeguarding processes in place to manage:
- bullying and/or harassment
- the Prevent Duty which tackles radicalisation and extremism
- safety online and/or cyber bullying
- risk assessments including health and safety and care plans
- student attendance
- recruitment procedures and/or vetted staff and
- child protection including abuse and exploitation
But in order to do this, they need a student information system to capture and analyse data that helps them understand their students better – not just their attendance, performance and learning/medical requirements, but their behaviour too.

- to measure progress continuously in order to proactively tailor provision and support.
