East Berkshire College
With over 800 full time and part-time courses attended by 6,400 students, an effective register solution is essential for a college like East Berkshire.
The college wanted to make the process of registering much more efficient. They sought a solution which would make paper registers redundant so that there was no paper information to be lost or rekeyed. They also wanted a solution which would allow them to mark the register while the class was taking place – and for that information to automatically and securely be transferred to their Management Information System.
In addition to the sheer number of students to be registered, the disparate locations also meant that the solution had to work across locations and buildings with very different IT set ups and availability. Two main campuses in Windsor and Langley are supplemented by learning and community centres from Maidenhead to Southall.
The college already uses Tribal’s ebs student information management solution and knew that the Mobile Registers element complemented and dovetailed into the system.
Tribal’s Mobile Registers app allows tutors to use any type of device – smartphone, laptop or tablet – to mark the registers while they’re in the classroom. Teachers can even use their own devices.
“We didn’t have to do a business case in order to buy the system as everyone could see the benefits so clearly that it was an obvious win,” comments Eddie Taylor, Database Officer at East Berkshire College. “You just need reasonable internet access and it works a treat,” he explains.
Introducing the system was “easy” – the MIS team sent a manual to the head of each department; sent staff an email regarding mobile and standard registers and included the same instructions on the college website. “It has been implemented very smoothly and is easy to maintain,” adds Eddie.
East Berkshire’s sites are all remote with a large site in Southall for languages and ESOL departments without computer networks - so having a solution which worked on mobile devices was essential. The other satellite community sites also prefer the mobile solution and even the tutors within the college itself prefer to take the register on their smart devices.
